Η Aaliyah είχε κάτι. Ένα μήνα πριν συμπληρώθηκαν 7 χρόνια από το θάνατό της. Το άλμπουμ που μόλις είχε ηχογραφήσει, θεωρώ ότι είναι από τα καλύτερα του είδους του κι έδειχνε ότι θα είχαμε να περιμένουμε πολλά, αλλά δυστυχώς ήταν και το τελευταίο της.
Μια μίνι αλλά extra smooth συλλογή με κάποια γνωστά και κάποια όχι :)

Σήμερα έχω ένα mixtape αφιερωμένο στον αγαπητό μου Revqueer, αφού μου εκμυστηρεύθηκε ότι ακούει eurodance στο δωμάτιό του και προβάρει χορευτικές φιγούρες για τα σαββατόβραδα. Κι επειδή είναι μικρούλης μωρέ, άχου το, είπα να του δώσω κι άλλο υλικό, από τόοοτε, που δεν τα είχε πολυπρολάβει. Daydream [Η ιστορία ενός τραγουδιού]

Daydream, I fell asleep amid the flowers
For a couple of hours on a beautiful day

Το 1968, οι βέλγοι Wallace Collection κυκλοφορούν το Daydream, με μελωδία βασισμένη σε έργο του Tchaikovsky (από το Danse de Cygnes, της Λίμνης των Κύκνων), με μέτρια επιτυχία. Παρ'όλα αυτά, στη συνέχεια διασκευάστηκε από τον Claude François (1969) στα γαλλικά και από τη Gunter Kallman Choir (1970).
Τριάντα χρόνια μετά (κι αφού έχει ήδη χρησιμοποιηθεί σε remix του She Said των Pharcyde από τον Geoff Barrow των Portishead (1996)), οι Beta Band το σαμπλάρουν για το Squares και οι I Monster για το Daydream In Blue, σχεδόν ταυτόχρονα, δημιουργείται μπέρδεμα και τελικά κυκλοφορεί σε single μόνο από τους I Monster. Και τα δύο είναι τα πιο αναγνωρίσιμα από όλες τις χρήσεις/διασκευές του πρωτότυπου, χρησιμοποιήθηκαν σε διαφημίσεις και σάουντρακ, ενώ παίζονται ακόμα και σήμερα.
Την ίδια χρονιά (2001) και οι Skinny παίρνουν sample για το On A Beautiful Day, αν και αυτή η εκδοχή δεν είναι και τόσο γνωστή -μετά από λίγο καιρό διαλύονται, όπως και οι Beta Band.
To 2006, o Lupe Fiasco το χρησιμοποιεί για το Daydreamin, με τη Jill Scott στα φωνητικά.

Erykah Badu

Μετά από πέντε χρόνια, η Erykah Badu ετοιμάζεται για δυναμική επιστροφή, ξεκινώντας με την κυκλοφορία του "The Kasbah" τον ερχόμενο Φλεβάρη. Θα ακολουθήσουν άλλα δύο άλμπουμ, με διαφορά μισού χρόνου μεταξύ τους, χωρίς να έχει αναφερθεί αν πρόκειται για τριλογία, που είναι και κάπως της μόδας τελευταία (βλ. Maxwell).

Μερικά facts:
  • από το 1997 ως σήμερα, έχει βγάλει μόνο 2 άλμπουμ (Baduizm, Mama's Gun), 1 ep (Worldwide Underground) & 1 live.
  • όταν κυκλοφόρησε το Baduizm το '97, οι κριτικοί έσπευσαν να την χρίσουν διάδοχο της Billie Holiday, λόγω της ιδιαίτερης χροιάς της φωνής της και της τεχνικής της, που τη θύμιζαν πολύ. στην πορεία απέδειξε ότι είναι πολλά περισσότερα από αυτό.
  • έχει δύο παιδιά, το πρώτο μαζί με τον Andre 3000 των Outkast και το δεύτερο με τον ράπερ D.O.C.
  • έχει παίξει σε μερικές ταινίες, όπως το "Blues Brothers 2000" & το "The Cider House Rules". είχε εξάλλου σπουδάσει χορό και ηθοποιία, πριν αποφασίσει να επικεντρωθεί στη μουσική.
  • θεωρείται ότι συνέβαλλε τα μέγιστα στην άνθιση της neo soul, είδος που ξεπήδησε στα τέλη της προηγούμενης δεκαετίας, μαζί με τον D'Angelo, το Maxwell και άλλους.
  • οι μεγαλύτερες επιτυχίες της είναι τα "On & On", "Tyrone", "You Got Me"(μαζί με τους Roots), "Bag Lady" (κλικ για το βίντεο).
  • το ντεμπούτο της είναι και το πιο πετυχημένο άλμπουμ της μέχρι στιγμής (5 φορές πλατινένιο)
  • το νέο της άλμπουμ κυκλοφορεί επίσημα τη μέρα των γενεθλίων της (26/2).
  • η εμφάνισή της έχει ένα ιδιαίτερο και προσωπικό στυλ. στο ξεκίνημά της ξεχώριζε από τα τεράστια χρωματιστά τουρμπάνια και τα αφρικανικού τύπου φορέματα. αργότερα δε δίστασε να ξυρίσει τα μαλλιά της και να τα βάψει πράσινα.
  • θεωρείται πρότυπο τόσο ως γυναίκα όσο και ως καλλιτέχνις, με έντονες κοινωνικές ανησυχίες.
  • έχουν διαρρεύσει δύο τραγούδια από το επερχόμενο άλμπουμ, το "Honey" και το "Real Thing".
  • μετράει άπειρες συνεργασίες, μεταξύ των οποίων με τους Common, D'Angelo, The Roots, Roy Hargrave, Queen Latifah, Pharoahe Monch, Jill Scott, Sergio Mendes/Will.I.Am, Q-Tip, Stephen Marley, Outkast, Angie Stone, Bilal, Wu-Tang Clan.
  • φημίζεται ιδιαίτερα για τα live της. δεν είναι τυχαίο ότι το live άλμπουμ της κυκλοφόρησε λίγο μόνο καιρό μετά το ντεμπούτο της.
  • το ep "Wordwide Underground" είναι ό, τι πιο πειραματικό έχει κάνει, ένα soul funk jam διάρκειας μιας ώρας, που περιλαμβάνει το εξαίσιο, διάρκειας 11 λεπτών "I Want You", που στα live της το εμηνεύει πιο μαζεμένο, αλλά εκπληκτικά (βίντεο 1 & 2 -αγαπημένο).
  • το "Ms Jackson" που έκανε παγκόσμια γνωστούς τους Outkast, είναι γραμμένο για τη μητέρα της.
  • όχι μόνο γράφει η ίδια τα τραγούδια της, αλλά σκηνοθετεί και πολλά από τα βίντεο κλιπ της.
  • το κανονικό της όνομα είναι Erica Abi Wright. αντιγράφοντας από τη Wikipedia,
    At some point in her youth Badu decided to change the spelling of her name from Erica to Erykah - "kah" being a muslim word for "can do no wrong". She would eventually change her surname to Badu ("manifest truth and light" in arabic), a personal move which she accredits to her rejection of her slave name. Badu has also explained her second name as a phonetic term referencing the scatting style that many jazz vocalists utilize. Badu is also an African name for the 10th born child used for the Ashanti people in Ghana.
